Gone is the Lawn!
…or how to reduce water use and create a beautiful strolling garden
This back yard viewed from the upper stories had well established perimeter plantings: some roses at the toe of the hill and a big, nondescript, sloping lawn with a small patio lost in the far corner. The lawn never looked good and still required care, so the owner decided to eliminate it and create a more attractive and less thirsty garden.
We regarded the site, built dry-stack retaining walls to create different levels, installed meandering paths and steps leading to intimate seating areas, and took advantage of microclimates to create a small succulent garden, a mini orchard, and a shade garden, integrating the existing plant palette for continuity.
